3rd Grade- LA History Puppet Plays

3rd Grade- LA History Puppet Plays

Our third graders spend a large portion of their year investigating our city’s history, landmarks, government, and heroes. We designed an arts integrated unit that allowed students to delve deeper into an investigation of LA history through the writing and performance of original shadow puppet plays. Students worked in teams of 3 or 4 to investigate, write and perform LA history shadow plays based on their team’s research focus (i.e. Old Chinatown, The Great Wall of LA, the Pobladores, the Tonga, etc.) The unit was taught by the visual arts specialist and classroom teachers, and covered the following areas:

  • investigation of traditional shadow puppetry forms from China and Indonesia
  • investigation of contemporary forms of shadow puppetry
  • research of LA’s historical turning points and landmarks using primary and secondary sources
  • writing of an original shadow puppet play
  • creation of original puppets, props and settings
  • rehearsal and performance of puppet plays
  • facilitation of reflection with families

The unit targeted standards in Social Studies, ELA, and Visual Arts.
